Upgrading Google Play Apps on Your Android Devices

You can choose to update your Android device's apps individually or allow them to be updated automatically.

Update apps individually

On your mobile device

  1. Open the Google Play Store app
  2. Touch the Menu icon > My Apps.
    • Apps with available updates are labeled "Update"
  3. Select individual apps and touch Update
Tip: In some cases, you may need to restart your device to update an app.
On Android TV

Set up automatic updates on your mobile device

  1. Open the Google Play Store app .
  2. Touch the Menu icon > My Apps.
    • Apps with available updates are labeled "Update."
  3. Select the app you want to update.
  4. Touch Menu and check the box next to "Auto-update."
    • When the Auto-update box is selected, the app will update automatically when updates are available.
    • To turn off automatic updates and manually approve updates, uncheck the box next to "Auto-update."
Set up automatic updates over Wi-Fi only

If you have a mobile data (3G/4G) plan, you can choose to automatically update apps over Wi-Fi only. Updating apps on Wi-Fi can help lower your mobile data usage on your device.

  1. Open the Google Play Store app .
  2. Touch the Menu iconouch the Menu icon > Settings.
  3. Under "General," select Auto-update apps.
  4. Select Auto-update apps over Wi-Fi only.
Make sure your device is set up to use a Wi-Fi connection by going to your device's main Settings menu > Wi-Fi.

Enable Automatic Downloads for iTune Apps.

Automatically download purchases from the App Store, iBooks Store, or iTunes Store to your computers and iOS devices.

Content that's eligible for Automatic Downloads will download automatically to iOS devices and iTunes-authorized computers associated with your Apple ID after you turn on the feature.

If you're using Family Sharing, your family's content won't automatically download to your devices. Only content that you've purchased with your Apple ID will download automatically.

Requirements for Automatic Downloads

In order to turn on Automatic Downloads, you need:

Music, Movies, TV Shows, and Apps

  1. Open iTunes.
  2. If you haven't authorized your computer, choose Store > Authorize This Computer.
  3. 3 Open the iTunes Store Preferences:
  4. 4 Select the content that you want to automatically download. If you can't select these options, you need to sign in to the iTunes Store with your Apple ID

Books

In OS X Mavericks v10.9 or later and iTunes 11.1 or later, the Automatic Downloads preference for books is in the iBooks for Mac app. To turn on automatic downloads for books:

  • Open the iBooks for Mac app.
  • Choose iBooks > Preferences > Store.
  • Select "Download new purchases automatically."

On your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

  1. Tap Settings > iTunes & App Store.
  2. If prompted, sign in with your Apple ID.
  3. Tap the content that you want to automatically download. If Books isn't listed, download iBooks from the App Store.

You can turn Automatic Downloads on or off over your cellular network on an iPhone or iPad Wi-Fi + 3G. Go to Settings > Store and turn Cellular Data on or off. Cellular Data downloads are limited to a file size of 50 MB or smaller.

If your iOS device has an Internet connection and you enabled push notifications, the content should automatically download. On an associated device that doesn't support Push Notifications, the specified content should automatically appear in the download queue where you can manually start the download within iTunes.
