Bible Passage for Today: Genesis 12:1-6, King James Version (KJV)
1 Now the Lord had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father's house, unto a land that I will shew thee:
2 And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing:
3 And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.
4 So Abram departed, as the Lord had spoken unto him; and Lot went with him: and Abram was seventy and five years old when he departed out of Haran.
5 And Abram took Sarai his wife, and Lot his brother's son, and all their substance that they had gathered, and the souls that they had gotten in Haran; and they went forth to go into the land of Canaan; and into the land of Canaan they came.
6 And Abram passed through the land unto the place of Sichem, unto the plain of Moreh. And the Canaanite was then in the land.
"Destination and Concentration"
Joseph Chamberlain was a famous British statesman (1836-1914). In his younger years, he taught Sunday school in Birmingham. His favorite verse of Scripture was a sentence from Genesis 12:5, "They went forth to go into the land of Canaan; and into the land of Canaan they came" (KJV). It was a motto well-suited to a man of his determination and iron will. It also gave him a biblical basis for citing two qualifications for success in life. One is to have the right destination –"They went forth to go to the land of Canaan." The second is to keep going after we have started–"into the land of Canaan they came.
In Genesis 12:1-3, we find encouragement for our journey as Christians, too through God's call to Abraham. Do we have the right destination? How do we know what that destination is? Abraham didn't know exactly where his end destination was when God called him out of the land of Ur and told him to go "unto a land that I will shew thee" (Genesis 12:1, KJV Bible). And what was Abraham's response?
"So Abram departed, as the Lord had spoken unto him" (Genesis 12:4, KJV Bible).
At this point in history, Abraham did not know exactly where He would be going. He only knew that God was commanding him to leave, and he obeyed. He stepped out in faith, and he kept going until he got to the place God had planned for him and his descendents.
Like Abraham, we might not get immediate specifics as to where our final destination is, but God's word does promises to direct our steps along the way. "And the Lord shall guide thee continually, and satisfy thy soul in drought, and make fat thy bones: and thou shalt be like a watered garden, and like a spring of water, whose waters fail not." (Isaiah 58:11, KJV Bible). Proverbs 3:5-6 reminds us to trust God in all we do and not try and figure the details of life out ourselves. But that same scripture promises that "he shall direct thy paths." (Proverbs 3:6, KJV Bible).
Knowing God does have future destination for us, and knowing his presence will always be with us enables us to continue with the journey with confidence when we can't see clearly what's up ahead. We will be able to keep going, into the "land" promised to us. Until we get there, it's our job to seek out scripture that helps us to know the steps along the way.
